According to the Wall Street Journal:
Outside, a group of people asked guests to put on a hat made out of (fake) bananas and look really “sad or angry.” With luck, participants were told they would end up on the internet, as part of a “meme.” (A meme is a bit of cultural information, such as a funny photo of video clip, that is repeatedly shared between people, for those confused.
So it looks like I might have bugged a Wall Street Journal reporter to wear a banana hat the other night at the tumblr party…
